The industry’s first! New H3C assists China Mobile in completing MSR6 TE verification testing

Recently, New H3C Group, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Unigroup, assisted China Mobile Research Institute in completing the MSR6 TE (Multicast Source Routing over IPv6 Traffic Engineering) validation test, and all key functions achieved expected results. As the first enterprise in the industry with multicast MSR6 TE acceptance capability, Xinhuasan has effectively upgraded the basic forwarding capability of the network by virtue of its profound accumulation in the field of network programming, providing strong support for the improvement of domestic and foreign standard systems, and further promoting the high-quality construction and development of the next-generation Internet.

Multicast technology has a wide range of applications in the field of data communication. It can effectively solve the problem of single point transmission and multi-point reception, thereby achieving efficient data transmission from single point to multi-point in the network, saving a lot of network bandwidth and reducing network load. It has a wide range of applications in video conferencing, real-time streaming media, network broadcasting, and television.

However, traditional multicast technology faces two major challenges. Firstly, multicast has a state, which means that network devices need to establish a multicast distribution tree for each multicast stream. In large-scale multicast scenarios, devices retain a large number of multicast stream states, which can lead to slow convergence of multicast services and delayed network response when the network changes; Secondly, it does not support TE (Traffic Engineering), which means it does not support intelligent routing of multicast forwarding paths, which may lead to network congestion.

To solve the above problems, the source address routing concept is introduced into multicast through exploration of multicast technology. With the help of SRv6 (Segment Routing v6, based on IPv6 forwarding plane) technology, the problem of traditional multicast being unable to intelligently select routes is solved. Combined with BIER (Bit Index Explicit Replication) stateless multicast technology, an innovative IPv6 based multicast source routing MSR6 is developed, which supports TE and can effectively achieve:

  • Flexible expansion, suitable for large-scale network construction. Intermediate nodes do not need to maintain multicast flow status or perceive multicast services, improving the flexibility and scalability of multicast services, saving network equipment resources, and supporting large-scale multicast services;
  • Efficient and stable, with a better business experience. By arranging multicast paths through head nodes, efficient switching of multicast paths and SLA guarantee for multicast services can be achieved, enhancing the business experience;
  • Simplify operations and make network management more efficient. Intermediate nodes do not need to run dedicated multicast control protocols such as PIM, and the control plane only needs to run unicast routing protocols such as IGP and BGP, simplifying network deployment and operation.

H3C has taken the lead in implementing the full process functionality of MSR6 TE based on the IETF standard draft led by China Mobile, such as draft-liu-pim-msr6-encapsulation and forwarding, as well as the CCSA industry standard “IPv6 Multicast Source Routing (MSR6) Data Forwarding Technical Requirements”. It also supports multicast VPN over MSR6 TE, public GTM over MSR6 TE multi service scenarios, and continuous/discontinuous differentiated deployment methods.

At present, the H3C CR16000 series of high-end routers from New H3C fully supports MSR6 TE capability, including H3C CR16000H-F, H3C CR16000E-F, and H3C CR16000-M. During the acceptance testing process, New H3C adhered to the spirit of innovation, deep cultivation of technology, and win-win cooperation, and won high praise from China Mobile.    

With the large-scale deployment of IPv6, the new generation MSR6 TE technology based on IPv6 basic network will usher in broad development space. As the basic protocol of the IPv6+technology system, MSR6 TE can be deployed together with other IPv6+features in the future to meet the differentiated needs of users, such as combining multicast path orchestration and network slicing to achieve slicing guarantee for multicast traffic bandwidth and latency; By combining multicast path orchestration with deterministic networks (DetNet), deterministic jitter protection for multicast traffic can be achieved, and applications can be explored in data center networks, national multi AS backbone networks, and large metropolitan area networks.
